Canada’s weather forecast: cold, rain in some areas

by Ainsley Ingram

Falling temperatures are triggering extreme cold warnings in parts of Canada, according to CTV Your Morning meteorologist Kelsey McEwen.

Provinces like Ontario and Quebec will see a brief drop in temperatures as a strong arctic cold front moves south.

McEwen said Quebec is under a flash freeze warning and temperatures dropped 10 degrees Friday. Extreme cold warnings are in effect for northern Quebec.

In southern Ontario, arctic fronts will produce lake-effect snow in Huron and Georgian Bay. Extreme cold warnings would be issued in the north, McEwen said.

The lower Great Lakes areas, including Toronto, will be cold Saturday with morning wind chills reaching temperatures as low as -20 degrees.

In addition to the chilly temperatures, parts of Ontario will experience dense fog Friday morning, including Toronto, Hamilton, Kingston, Windsor and Niagara.

The cold front won’t last forever as temperatures warm again across Canada by Sunday or Monday, McEwen said.

Rain and snow are forecast for the Atlantic part of Canada, with precipitation amounts of 25 to 50 millimeters predicted in the coastal areas. Up to 100 millimeters of rain and wind gusts of 60 to 80 km/h are expected in Newfoundland and Labrador from Friday night into Saturday.

McEwen said that due to rain, melting snow and partially or completely frozen ground, “runoff” – more water than the land can hold – is expected.

Freezing rain is forecast for the Avalon Peninsula on Friday.

Residents of the Northwest Territories can expect a winter storm, including Yellowknife, as strong wind gusts will gust around 70 km/h and snow will fall on Friday, accompanied by a wind chill of around -40 km/h.

The mountain passes of BC and Alberta will get their share of snow and blowing snow Sunday into Monday.

There were no weather warnings for the Prairie Provinces or Yukon as of Friday morning.
