Coco the cat jumps off the NL electricity pole and survives

by Ainsley Ingram

ST. JOHN’S, NL –

An orange tabby cat in Newfoundland is quickly becoming famous for its brave leap from the top of a power pole.

A video making the rounds on social media shows Coco jumping to the ground with her paws spread as a utility worker climbs to the top of the pole to save the cat.

Alice Reid, Coco’s owner and videographer, says the cat was chased up the pole by a dog and remained there for about two hours.

She says she tried to use a ladder to get Coco down, but her daughter ended up calling Newfoundland Power’s emergency line because she couldn’t seem to do anything else.

Reid says that Coco was unharmed and unmolested by the ordeal and that he has been sleeping, purring and eating lots of treats since his big comedown.

She says she posted her video of the thwarted rescue on Facebook on Monday to thank the road judge for his efforts; It has since been shared nearly 700 times and reported by at least one local media outlet.

“That pole was shaking quite a bit and the cat was scared to death,” Reid said in an interview, adding that Coco was “howling constantly” the entire time he was on the pole. “I didn’t think he was going to jump, and my God, what a shock.”
