STARKVILLE – Head coach Chris Hooshyar and the Mississippi State women’s tennis program are pleased to welcome Gianna Oboniye to their roster.

Oboniye is joining the Bulldogs from Edmonton, Canada and will arrive on campus in fall 2024 to begin her career.

“I am very excited for Gianna to join the team,” said Hooshyar. “I’ve always said it, one of the greatest honors as a college coach is when a kid calls you and says I want to come and play for you. This is a big responsibility and one I don’t take lightly.” The Bulldog family will love what Gianna brings to the court. She is already showing top performance. I can’t wait to get on the practice field with her and see how high her ceiling really is. I think it’s pretty high.”

in 2024, Oboniye became a double champion of the U18 Canadian Outdoor Nationals. She was also the J60 Edmonton doubles champion and singles finalist at the tournament.

Oboniye competed in the J100 Burlington and J30 Halifax in 2022, where she became double champion in both disciplines. Last year she was a double finalist in the J200 Montreal and J30 Victoria.

The 17-year-old has competed in the U12 Canadian Indoor Nationals twice in his young career. In 2019, Oboniye placed ninth individually at the national championships and the year before, she placed fifth individually and received the Sportsmanship Award.

Oboniye also competed at the 2018 U12 Canadian Outdoor Nationals, where she became doubles champion, placed third in singles and received another sports performance award.

She competed in many team events including the Canadian Summer Games Alberta Team in 2022 and the Canadian Western Summer Games Team in 2019. Oboniye played in Canada against US New York and Canada against US Montreal in 2019.

Oboniye was one of three U12 girls selected to represent Canada at the 2018 COPA COSAT in Bolivia, where the team became champions in the final.
