Weather in Canada: Warm temperature, cold air, snow

by Ainsley Ingram

A dose of sunshine is expected to warm up western Canada, while cooler temperatures and snow are forecast elsewhere in the country.

According to CTV Your Morning meteorologist Kelsey McEwen, temperatures in B.C. and Alberta will be set for the high teens and lows of 20 C on Monday after a weekend of record-breaking warmth.

The warm temperatures and sunshine are thanks to a prevailing high pressure system, she said. Across much of British Columbia, sunshine is expected to hold out for another two days before a slow decline brings rain mid-week. Some areas will also face reduced air quality, McEwen said.

In Alberta, record-warm temperatures will continue into Monday before cooling off on Tuesday.

Across Atlantic Canada, wind and snow warnings have been issued in Newfoundland and Labrador, Cape Breton and coastal Quebec. Between 15 and 25 centimeters of snow is expected in these areas. McEwen said strong wind gusts of 100 km/h were expected.

Temperatures will be cooler than average throughout the week in parts of Ontario and Quebec, including Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal, McEwen said.

In the Prairies, blizzard conditions are possible in northern Manitoba as a center of low pressure moves through the area. Regina and Saskatoon should expect unseasonable heat on Monday, but temperatures will be below normal for the rest of the week.

Warnings in Nunavut range from winter storms to extreme cold, depending on location. Environment Canada’s morning forecast noted an unusual temperature trend this week in Yellowknife, where highs expected early this week will be between -17°C and -20°C before improving to a more seasonal high around -10°C over the weekend °C warm.

And Whitehorse may see showers or thunderstorms with a forecast high of 8, but it is expected to gradually cool down as the week progresses.
