Too many children and young people suffer concussions during sports and recreational activities, sometimes with tragic consequences. To address this important public health issue, the government continues to invest in the prevention, detection and treatment of concussions.

Today, the Honorable Mark Holland, Minister of Health, announced nearly $250,000 to Parachute Leaders in Injury Prevention (Parachute). This funding will support updates to Canada’s Concussion in Sports Policy and other key concussion resources. These updates take into account new recommendations for concussions in sports recently published in British Journal of Sports Medicine.

Parachute is a key player in concussion prevention and treatment in Canada. This national, nonprofit injury organization previously developed this Canadian policy on concussions in sport and other concussion knowledge and awareness products for stakeholders such as health professionals and sports organizations.

The Public Health Agency of Canada is funding this project through the Healthy Canadians and Communities Fund (HCCF). HCCF’s program activities include raising awareness about the prevention of chronic diseases and common behavioral risk factors.

Through this investment, the Government of Canada supports the health and well-being of Canadians by further advancing the prevention, detection and treatment of concussions.
