NB News: CAF member charged with assault and imprisonment

by Naomi Parham

A member of the Canadian Armed Forces has been charged with unlawful imprisonment, assault, mischief and criminal damage following an incident at the medical center at 5th Division Support Base Gagetown in New Brunswick on March 12.

The Department of Defense confirmed to CTV News Atlantic that the incident involved the member and a health care worker. No one was injured in the incident, but it caused the medical center’s primary care and physical therapy services to remain closed for the remainder of the week. It is scheduled to reopen on Tuesday.

The Oromocto RCMP detachment arrested the member immediately following the incident, although an NB RCMP spokesperson said they are no longer in the custody of the RCMP and military police are leading the investigation.

Some medical appointments have been effectively postponed until Monday, but the medical center will not reopen for in-person appointments until Tuesday.

“Base management is following the matter closely to ensure that professional support is provided to all involved and that appropriate administrative or disciplinary action is taken in accordance with CAF policy,” a spokesperson said in an emailed statement.
