Ukraine waits in vain for Canada’s air defense system

Canada has not yet been able to deliver the promised NASAMS air defense system to Ukraine, reports “RBCUkraine“. The reason is the lack of financing from the United States, which blocks business, reports “RBC Ukraine”, citing the “Edmonton Journal”.

Financial hurdles in the United States delay NASAMS delivery

During his visit to Edmonton this week, Canadian Defense Minister Bill Blair said that the issue related to NASAMS for Ukraine is a state level.

“We tried to speed up the process. “Unfortunately, the Americans encountered certain difficulties in their own area of financing,” Blair said, according to RBC Ukraine. Everyone involved understands the importance of the project and feels a strong sense of urgency.

Norwegian air defense missile system

NASAMS is a Norwegian mobile air defense missile system capable of firing 72 missiles in 12 seconds and shooting down aircraft, helicopters and cruise missiles in a radius of up to 40 kilometers.

The system was developed by the Norwegian company Kongsberg and the American company Raytheon.

US still withholds NASAMS despite Canadian payment

Canada agreed to buy the system last year as part of a deal with the United States. But group purchases are still suspended.

In January 2023, the Canadian Department of Defense transferred $406 million to the U.S. government for the system.

However, it was revealed earlier this year that the United States had not yet transferred the system to Canada. It is therefore unclear when Ukraine will receive the system.
