Forecast: Weather warnings across Canada

From heavy rain to extreme cold, Environment Canada issued weather warnings for all 10 provinces and two territories on Wednesday.

Ontario and Quebec

Much of Ontario and Quebec was under a flash freeze warning Wednesday, including Ottawa and Montreal. The current mild temperatures are expected to drop dramatically below freezing starting Tuesday afternoon, resulting in icy roads and sidewalks.

Winter storm warnings are also in effect for parts of northern Ontario and Quebec, with strong winds and more than 20 centimeters of snow expected in some regions. Snow squall warnings are now in effect for some areas near Lake Simcoe and Lake Huron in Ontario.

Atlantic Canada

Rain and wind warnings also covered much of Atlantic Canada on Wednesday.

Some areas of New Brunswick could see up to 100 millimeters of rain Wednesday into Thursday morning, along with damaging winds of 70 to 80 km/h or more.

Strong winds and heavy but smaller amounts of rain are also expected in Nova Scotia, while Prince Edward Island is warned of strong southerly wind gusts of up to 90 km/h.

Potentially damaging “wrecking winds” of up to 120 km/h are also forecast for southwest Newfoundland.

Prairies and Alberta

Heading west, extreme cold warnings extend across portions of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and northern Ontario, where wind chill values ​​could reach -45 by Wednesday morning.

BC and the territories

In B.C., snowfall warnings are in effect for parts of the Central Coast and Fraser Valley, where 20 centimeters or more is forecast by Wednesday afternoon. East Vancouver Island was also under a rainfall warning, with 50mm expected overnight into late Wednesday afternoon.

Yukon was the only area not under a weather warning on Wednesday, while extreme cold warnings were in effect for some parts of Nunavut and the Northwest Territories, with wind chill values ​​reaching as low as -55 degrees on Wednesday morning.
