Canadians begin to benefit from a temporary increase in the GST rebate on Friday

by Ainsley Ingram

OTTAWA – Canadians who qualify for the GST can expect to receive an additional lump sum payment as early as Friday.

A bill introduced by the Liberal government to temporarily double the refund became law last month with unanimous support from opposition parties.

The NDP has long advocated this measure to help low- and modest-income Canadians cope with the rising cost of living.

During a speech in Toronto on Friday, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau touted the refund as support for Canadians in need.

“That money hits your bank accounts or you get a check in the mail which is a real relief from inflation,” Freeland said.

This year, inflation has reached levels not seen in four decades, with an annual inflation rate of 6.9% in September.

The Canada Revenue Agency says those eligible for the rebate will have the payment deposited into their bank account on Friday.

A single person eligible for the rebate can expect up to $234, while a couple with two children will receive up to $467.

However, if payment doesn’t appear immediately, the CRA says people should allow up to 10 days for processing before contacting the agency.
