Canada temporarily closes its embassy in Kabul

The Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced that it will temporarily close the Canadian Embassy in Kabul, Afghanistan. The closure was made because the Taliban had entered Kabul.

Reported by AFP on Sunday (15/8/2021), Canada’s foreign ministry said embassy staff in Kabul were already on their way back to Canada. The embassy office will reopen once conditions in Kabul are under control and safe.

The withdrawal of embassy staff follows the withdrawal of most US troops. As well as the rapid advance of the Taliban who have conquered large parts of the country. Taliban fighters are also ready to take the capital Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, President Ashraf Ghani has left Kabul. This was conveyed by a senior Afghan Interior Ministry official.

The Canadian government had previously announced on Friday that it was ready to welcome up to 20,000 refugees. Afghanistan in response to the humanitarian crisis caused by the conflict.

United States (US) Secretary of State Antony Blinken also said that staff from the United States Embassy (Embassy) in Kabul had been transferred to the airport. This was done when Taliban troops entered the Afghan capital.

Reported by AFP on Sunday (15/8), Blinken said the Taliban were on the verge of total victory. Currently, Taliban troops are said to have been ordered to wait on the outskirts of Kabul and the government admits this is a “transfer of power”.

“That’s why we’re sending in troops to make sure we can do it in a safe and orderly way. The complex itself, the people who leave from there and go to the airport,” Blinken told the ABC .
