TORONTO – Cineplex has canceled showings of a South Indian film after four drive-by shootings at theaters across the Greater Toronto Area on the day of its premiere.

Cineplex spokeswoman Michelle Saba said the theater chain has canceled the action film “Malaikottai Vaaliban” due to circumstances beyond their control.

Saba added that Cineplex is working closely with local authorities, who are conducting an investigation into incidents at their cinemas.

York Regional Police said they were called to a theater in Richmond Hill, Ont., on Jan. 24 after an employee arrived to find the windows had been shot.

On the same day, police responded to similar incidents at theaters in Vaughan, Scarborough and Brampton. According to police, all incidents occurred in the early hours of the morning and no injuries were reported.

York Regional Police spokeswoman Lisa Moskaluk says investigators believe “the incidents are related and are being targeted because of the similarities” between them.
