Architecture film festivals are back | arkitektnytt.no

by Ainsley Ingram

In October, it’s time for architectural film festivals in Bergen and Oslo. The architect of the city of Bergen will shed new light on films that thematize urban development by showing them in a different context in the city.

After editions postponed and cut in 2020, architectural film festivals are resuming in force. This week, the Bergen International Film Festival (BIFF) released its program, and for the fourth year in a row, the festival has a collaboration with the city’s City Architect.

Five films will be screened under the aegis of Byarkitekten, during the festival which takes place from October 20 to 28. At the same time, Arkitekturfilm Oslo will also be organized, for the sixth time, from October 21 to 24, by Rom for kunst og arkitektur. October is obviously the month to step into dark theaters and watch movies on – and off – architecture.

Increased interest

– Since we started to organize Arkitekturfilm Oslo in 2016, there has been increased interest in the link between cinema and architecture, says Gjertrud Steinsvåg, festival director and leader of Rom. She specifies that the film festivals in Haugesund, Grimstad, Bergen and Trondheim have all selected films related to architecture.

The festival will be an arena for discussing architecture and society, Steinsvåg believes.

– Architectural communication is not just about pointing out or describing a project, but the ability to ask questions and facilitate critical reflection on what architecture is and represents.

– Regarding the festival, the films themselves are such invitations to conversations, at the same time that we are in a phase where we will strengthen other activities that make the festival a space for discussion, she said. . One of them is a mini-library with books on architectural cinema, produced by Morten Ednes, which will be available at Rom for kunst og arkitektur, she says.
