Zellers restaurant returns as a food truck

by Rex Daniel

Although you can’t sit on the old, cracked leather benches and breathe in the thick smell of gravy and fries, while the soft sound of clanging dishes provide the soundtrack to your lunch, Zellers plans to roll out food trucks for those “craving a taste of nostalgia.”

The Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) announced on Friday that the Canadian retail chain will serve “some fondly remembered Zellers family restaurant fan favorites.”

“Zellers is mobilizing a fleet of food trucks to welcome customers to its first stores opening this spring,” HBC said in a press release. “And while Zellers tuned the engines and pumped up the tires, the Canadians were tasked with creating the menu.”

The iconic Canadian retailer says it’s nearly impossible to open a sit-down restaurant inside The Bay stores, so fans will have to make do with food trucks.

Last week, Zellers announced the locations of its first 25 in-store “experiences.” Stores are expected to open at Hudson’s Bay branches across Canada.

HBC said Friday that Zellers fans can take to Instagram and vote on 10 menu items, including five for the final cut.

“After initial stops in stores — and if customers accept the return — the Zellers Diner on Wheels will prepare for its cross-Canada debut,” HBC said.

The retailer said details on location and dates will be announced at a later date.
