Worried that Omicron, Canada is tightening travel restrictions

by Edwin Robertson

BENGALURU (ANTARA) – Canada is expected to tighten restrictions on international travel with new measures to be announced on Wednesday in an effort to limit the spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, according to CBC News.

Measures that the Canadian government could take, including a ban on entry into Canada for all foreign arrivals, including those from the United States, who do not belong to an essential group.

The measures were discussed in a phone conversation between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Canada’s provincial leaders, but no decision has yet been made.

A number of possible restrictive measures could include stricter quarantine and testing for travelers allowed to enter Canada, including returning Canadian citizens and permanent residents.

Canada has announced an entry ban for people who have recently traveled to 10 countries in Africa.

The Omicron variant of the coronavirus, which health officials say is more contagious than the Delta variant, has been spreading among Canadians since it was first detected in November 2021.

CBC News reports that there is broad agreement between Trudeau and the leaders of Canada’s 10 provinces on the need to increase the rate at which booster shots are administered (booster) or the third dose of vaccine dramatically.
