Toronto filmmaker Sarah Polley earned her first Golden Globe nomination for best screenplay for “Women Talking.”

Adapted from Manitoba author Miriam Toews’ 2018 novel of the same name, the film centers on a group of women who debate what to do following a series of sexual assaults in their remote Mennonite community.

The film is also up for Best Original Score.

Meanwhile, James Cameron’s highly anticipated ‘Avatar: The Way of the Water’ is among the films in the running for Best Picture, while the Ontario-born filmmaker was named Best Director.

Disney Pixar’s “Turning Red,” about a Chinese-Canadian girl struggling with puberty, is nominated for Best Animated Feature. The film is directed by Domee Shi from Toronto.

Other Canadian nominees include Vancouver’s Seth Rogen, supporting actor in the limited series ‘Pam & Tommy’, while Hamilton native Martin Short picked up Best Actor in a Television Comedy Series for his role in “Only Murders in the Building”.

The Golden Globes will air on January 10, a year after a scandal and a boycott threw the Hollywood Foreign Press Association into disarray and canceled the 2021 TV awards.

This report from The Canadian Press was first published on December 12, 2022.
