The political scientist assessed the chances of Russian weapons deployment in Latin America Russian News EN

Latin American countries will not accept the deployment of Russian weapons on their territory. This was stated by the director of the Institute for the United States and Canada (RAS) Valery Garbuzov during a conversation with CASS.

He explained that Cuba and Venezuela, which are under US sanctions, will not want to worsen relations with the United States, and the deployment of Russian missiles will only toughen the sanctions regime. In addition, according to the political scientist, the decision of Latin American countries could also be influenced by the prospect of a long stay of arms from Russia.

Garbuzov also expressed the opinion that Russia and NATO should stop seeing each other as adversaries. However, the North Atlantic Alliance clings to the legal side and the bureaucracy.

Earlier in January, several Russian media reported that Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov had raised the possibility of deploying Russian strategic weapons in Cuba or another Latin American country in response to the actions of the NATO in Eastern Europe. However, in reality, the diplomat said he would neither confirm nor rule out such a possibility.
