Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced that early parliamentary elections will be held in the country in September, Tengrinews.kz reports with reference to Reuters.
Trudeau announced the early election nomination for September 20 and made a formal request to dissolve Parliament after Governor General Mary Simon, who represents British Monarch Elizabeth II, visited the country.
According to the Prime Minister, the elections will be held at a “key sequential moment” for Canada.
“We have supported you and now is the time to hear your voice. Canadians must decide how to end the fight against COVID-19,” he said.
As Reuters noted, Trudeau is seeking a majority in Parliament. The Liberal Party of Canada (LPK), led by the Prime Minister, did not succeed two years ago and must therefore count on the support of the opposition to pass laws. At this stage, the LPK has 157 seats out of the 338 seats in parliament.

According to experts, the head of government wishes to capitalize on the success of the authorities in the vaccination campaign against the coronavirus. For example, over 71 percent of Canadians are fully immunized and over 82 percent have received at least one dose of the vaccine.
Meanwhile, the leader of the opposition New Democratic Party, Jagmit Singh, said it was “selfish” for Trudeau to announce an election during a pandemic because it undermines the efforts of Canadians to fight the pandemic.
It is reported that the election campaign in the country will only last around 36 days – the minimum time allowed by law.
