Jakarta (ANTARA) – U.S. automaker Tesla plans to open a factory to produce battery manufacturing equipment in the Canadian city of Markham, Ontario, Reuters reported on Saturday.
This was revealed by Mayor Frank Scarpitti, as the electric car maker ramped up production of cheaper 4680 battery cells with longer range.
Scarpitti didn’t give many details. In 2019, the American electric car maker acquired Canadian company Hibar, which manufactures the pumps used in the high-speed battery assembly that Tesla is introducing for its new 4680 battery cells.

“I am thrilled to announce that Tesla Canada is joining our already strong automotive and technology ecosystem by bringing a manufacturing facility to Markham City,” Mayor Scarpitti tweeted.
“This plant will be the first Tesla Canada-branded manufacturing plant in Canada and will produce state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment for use in Gigafactories located around the world for battery production,” he added.
Tesla did not immediately comment on the mayor’s tweet. Last year, Tesla Senior Vice President Andrew Baglino said at the Battery Day event that “vertical integration” with Hibar and others would allow them to build batteries faster and increase the production of 4680 battery cells.
Baglino said last month that Tesla would begin shipping its first vehicles with 4,680 batteries early next year.
Tesla is currently building 4,680 battery cells at a pilot plant in California and plans to start production at upcoming plants in Texas and Berlin.
