SEA Games is unclear, Indonesia is focusing on the 2022 Asian Games

Jakarta (ANTARA) – The Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) does not want to worry about the lack of decision regarding the implementation of the Vietnam SEA Games, so it has chosen to focus on the championships included in the 2022 calendar , including the Asian Games in Hangzhou.

KOI General Secretary Ferry J Kono said there were at least four multi-event The international games that Indonesia will participate in next year are the Asian Indoor Martial Arts Games (AIMAG) in Bangkok-Chonburi, Thailand in March, the Islamic Solidarity Games (ISG) in Turkey ( August), Hangzhou Asian Games (September), and Shantou Asian Youth Games (December).

“So far, we are still focusing on the multi-events included in the 2022 schedule. If the SEA Games take place and coincide with the event, it will of course be difficult for us to participate,” Ferry said in a written statement, Friday.

“However, this cannot be confirmed until the next meeting of the Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF). I think the Indonesian team should focus on the Asian Games. could really become an intermediate target as other ASEAN countries are also due to participate in the Commonwealth Games,” he added.

Ferry admits that in addition to the busy agenda for next year, the uncertainty of the SEA Games will also affect the national training budget. Therefore, the budget proposal must be submitted to the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) in November. Several additional data must be included, such as the time of implementation and the sport practiced.

The fate of holding the 2021 SEA Games has yet to be revealed as Vietnam, as the host, never gave any certainty during the SEAGF meeting on Friday.

The organizing committee said it was necessary to continue coordinating with the Vietnamese government to discuss the possibility of holding the multi-event these two years amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Apart from the fate of the SEA Games, the SEAGF meeting also discussed several other agendas, such as the explanation of the Thai Olympic Committee (NOC) regarding its desire to become the organizer of the 6th edition of AIMAG. The plan is that the organizing committee will implement health protocols such as the Tokyo Olympics.

In addition, discussions were also held on plans to assist ASEAN governments regarding plans to declare a statement that SEA Games sport refers to the Olympics and Asian Games.

The reason is that so far, the branches that have participated in the SEA Games refer to the SEAGF Charter, which is the stipulation of the host to compete in a minimum of 22 branches of three categories.

The first category is a compulsory sport consisting of athletics and water aerobics. The other 14 sports belong to the second category, which refers to the mandatory Olympic and Asian Games.

“And a maximum of eight categories of three branches whose number of matches is also limited because it aims to maintain the traditional sports of ASEAN countries,” Ferry concluded.
