new sci-fi movies 2022 not to be missed

by Edwin Robertson

In 2021, sci-fi and fantasy fans have finally been waiting for several film adaptations of cult sci-fi works at once: Dune, The Witcher, Wheel of Time, and the list goes on.

Also this year, the premiere of the TV series “Foundation” (Foundation), created on the basis of the cycle of novels of the same name by Isaac Asimov, took place. The second season will be released in 2022.

However, we warn fans of Asimov: the plot of the series only postpones the events of the epic of the book and does not have as much in common with the work of the great American science fiction writer as we would like.

Let’s talk about other movies in the fantasy and science fiction genres, which will be released next year.

Avatar 2 (expected release December 2022)

In 2010, the public did not have time to recover from the impressions left by the debut “Avatar” of James Cameron, known for his love of large-scale film projects, as a director. announcement on the start of filming “Avatar 2” and “Avatar 3”.

It is known that in the new film the characters will go to explore the underwater worlds of the planet Pandora.

The project took so long not only because of the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, but also because Cameron undertook the parallel implementation of several major film projects at once, including a 3D adaptation of the iconic Titanic.

James Cameron is truly obsessed with innovation in cinema, so it’s safe to say that the upcoming premieres will be, to say the least, technologically impressive.

“Obi-Wan Kenobi” (TV series)

Following the success of The Mandalorian, the Disney+ streaming service decided to focus more on the Star Wars universe.

The Boba Fett series has already been released, and in 2022 there will be a prequel series to the Rogue One movie called Andor. But perhaps Obi Wan-Kenobi’s story promises to be the most interesting.

Ewan McGregor will reprise his role as Kenobi from the 1990s prequels, while Hayden Christensen will reprise his role as Darth Vader.

The story is set 10 years after the end of Revenge of the Sith, in which Kenobi closely watches a young Luke Skywalker before the events of the original Star Wars Episode IV, A New Hope, released in 1977.

“65” (April 2022)

It’s one of the more mysterious premieres slated for 2022.

Adam Driver stars in this big-budget sci-fi thriller. Little is known about the plot of “65” other than a one-word description: “A shipwrecked astronaut lands on a mysterious planet, only to find he is not alone.”

Movie created by directors Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, best known for the original screenplay of A Quiet Place.

Actor Adam Driver doesn’t choose to work on short-lived projects, so this mysterious novelty is definitely worth a closer look.

Distant (April 2022)

Another film about how the conqueror of space “stuck on an alien planet”. However, this image promises not to scare the viewer. If “65” is classified as a thriller, then Distant is a comedy with dramatic elements.

“Remote” focuses on the misadventures of a “miner” working on an asteroid who struggles with his AI-controlled hazmat suit. During the mission to find the missing crew member, the astronaut will have to act quickly to find a comrade, as the protagonist’s oxygen supply is limited.

The film’s directors – Will Speck and Josh Gordon – are known for comedies such as Blades of Glory and New Year’s Party.

It’s unclear whether it will be a pure sci-fi comedy or just a fun action movie with sci-fi elements. Apparently, it will only be possible to find out after the premiere.

Star Mind (January 2021)

Let’s not bypass Russian cinema. The plot of this film tells about the near future, in which our planet was struck by a dangerous virusthreatening to destroy all life.

To save humanity, scientists send space expedition, which terraform distant planet to make it a new home for the surviving earthlings.

However, as usual, astronauts arriving in a new place are greeted by a mysterious force…

“Peripherals” (TV series)

Amazon’s exciting and ambitious project is an adaptation of the epic of the same name by American science fiction writer William Gibson.

Gibson’s novel alternates two storylines in complex ways going forward, so it’s no surprise that it caught the eye of Westworld creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy.

Perhaps the most promising of this premiere is director Vincenzo Natali (The Cube, The Void, Chimera), who will no doubt ensure that this series is amazing, even if it doesn’t make sense.

“The Man Who Fell to the Ground” (TV series)

This 1963 novel by Walter Tevis is a 20th century science fiction classic. It was once made into an equally iconic 1976 sci-fi film starring David Bowie.

The story of an alien secretly working on a spaceship to transport its population to our planet is certainly ripe for a modern adaptation. But the question remains whether the creative team working there is up to the task.

The adaptation is directed by prolific director and producer Alex Kurtzman, best known for writing many contemporary TV shows and movies such as Star Trek, Transformers, Cowboys & Aliens, and Mission: Impossible 3.

On the other hand, Chiwetel Ejiofor (“12 Years a Slave”) will play the main role of the alien. So this series may be worthy of attention if only for the sake of acting.

Three thousand years of desire (no release date)

An epic fantasy film starring Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton from Mad Max writer and director George Miller.

George Miller is a unique artist who takes his time with the release of his new projects. Thus, seven years have passed since the release of his last film, Mad Max: Fury Road.

Tilda Swinton will play one of the lead roles in the film.

All we know of the film is a two-sentence description of the meeting between scientist and genius. The genie asks the scientist to grant three wishes, which leads to unintended consequences.

Without Miller, after such a description, we could roll our eyes and forget this premiere, but the director is known for his ability to put all his soul into his project. The result should be stunning.

“Moonfall” (February 2022)

A new disaster film from director Roland Emmerich. His films “Independence Day” and “The Day After Tomorrow” are excellent examples of a very specific type of film where “everything explodes”.

The attitude towards this kind of cinematography will also determine the degree of admiration for the next “Moonfall”.

In the story, something mysterious knocks the Moon out of orbit, sending it on a collision course with Earth. Halle Berry stars as a strong woman and former astronaut who knows how to save the world. But will she be able to convince the powers that be in time? Epic explosions are guaranteed.

“Borderlands” (release date unknown)

A space comedy western based on a popular video game series from horror filmmaker Eli Roth. Roth previously wrote the HBO series Chernobyl and The Hangover movies. With such a record as a director, it’s hard to say exactly how the events of the new film will develop.

Without knowing the plot of the video games, it’s hard to understand the tone of this film adaptation, but the cast is certainly impressive – the film will star Cate Blanchett, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jack Black and Kevin Hart.

Resident Evil (TV series)

Another adaptation of the Resident Evil series of computer games. This time, Netflix is producing an eight-episode series written by one of the main writers of the hit TV series Supernatural.

The story would span two timelines, one set before a viral outbreak that turned humans into rampaging zombies, and the other set in a post-apocalyptic future.

Remember that science fiction and scientific and technological progress have historically developed together, constantly drawing inspiration from new ideas.

So we wrote that in the future, instead of people going to the doctor avatars will work, and astronomers are already beginning to research alien technology on the ground. We also talked about how scientists think it might look like real aliens.

Additionally, we reported that a NASA spacecraft was already in orbit to learn to shoot down asteroidsflying to earth.
