Liberal MP for Brampton rules out running against Patrick Brown for mayor

A Liberal MP for Brampton who previously said she was “considering” running against Mayor Patrick Brown in October has ruled herself out of the municipal race.

In a statement posted to her Twitter account on August 4, Brampton North MP Ruby Sahota said she would continue to work in the federal government.

“After a few weeks of reflection and discussions with my family, trusted colleagues and friends, I have come to the decision that the greatest benefit I can bring to Brampton is to advocate at the federal level,” he said. she declared.

Sahota was first elected as a Member of Parliament for the Liberal Party of Canada in 2015, winning re-election in 2019 and 2021. She serves as Deputy Government Whip.

Patrick Brown, the incumbent mayor and former Conservative leadership candidate, has signed up to run for a second term in Brampton.

Ramesh Sangha – a former Liberal MP for Brampton – also threw his hat in the ring.

Jermaine Chambers, Vidya Sugar Gautam, Bob Singh and Cody Vatcher have also announced their intention to run.

Sahota said she believes her job in Ottawa is “not done yet.” She cited global uncertainty, the climate crisis and international conflict as concerns she said still needed her attention at the federal level.

“For this reason, I will continue my role as elected representative for Brampton North and I wish nothing but the best to those who dedicate themselves to the noble cause of public service on behalf of the city that is so close to my heart,” Sahota wrote.
