Joe Poplawski will join the Blue Bombers’ Ring of Honor

WINNIPEG-

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will add former receiver Joe Poplawski to the club’s Ring of Honor at IG Field.

Poplawski will become the 14th inductee at halftime in Winnipeg’s regular season finale on Oct. 28 against the BC Lions.

Poplawski played for the Bombers from 1978 to 1986 after being acquired from Edmonton. He was named the CFL’s top rookie and twice won the league’s top Canadian award (1981, 1986).

A five-time CFL All-Star, Poplawski ranks third all-time in Bombers history in catches (549) and receiving yards (8,341) behind only Milt Stegall and James Murphy.

“It’s pretty damn special,” said Poplawski, an Edmonton native. “What comes to mind first is all the great teammates I’ve had over the years, and it’s certainly a tribute to them too.

“I’m also thinking of potential future Ring of Honor inductees, and it will be a great honor to be in the ring with them.”

Poplawski was inducted into the Winnipeg Football Club Hall of Fame in 1990 and the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 1998.

“Joe Poplawski was not only a great Blue Bomber, he’s been a long-time great Winnipegger and an exceptional person,” said Blue Bombers president and CEO Wade Miller. “The Winnipeg Football Club is thrilled to add him to our Ring of Honor along with the other legends of the franchise.”
