Canada suspects India of being involved in the assassination of a Sikh separatist on Canadian territory. This means that relations between the two countries have likely reached a new low.

“There is credible evidence,” Prime Minister Trudeau said. The Prime Minister assumes that the Indian government was involved in the murder of Hardeep Singh Nijjar (✝46).

The Canadian was a well-known supporter of an independent Sikh state in Indian Territory. He was shot dead in June outside a Sikh cultural center in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada.

Many people of Indian origin live in Canada. A particularly large number of them belong to the Sikh religious community.

India has rejected the allegations as “baseless allegations” and in turn accused Canada of harboring terrorists and extremists.

“The inaction of the Canadian government on this issue has long been a concern,” the Indian government said. “We urge the Canadian government to take immediate and effective action against any anti-India elements operating from its soil.”

Canada, however, maintains its suspicions. “Everything must be done to bring to justice the perpetrators of this murder,” Trudeau said.

In response, a senior Indian diplomat has already been expelled from the country.
