According to Susanto, the national training centering program (pelatnas) for the SEA Games had started in early 2020, even before the sporting event for the Southeast Asian region was announced as postponed in due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The national training center for the SEA Games, according to the 33-year-old chess player, is still in operation.
Susanto participated in the Chess World Cup 2021 in Shoci, Russia last July. However, he had to stop the match in the second round after testing positive for COVID-19.
Meanwhile, when asked about the new seeds in the Indonesian arena, Susanto said that currently many new seeds are emerging.
“Now it’s different from my time back then, now there are a lot of very good ones, they’re getting better, because seven-year-olds already like chess,” Susanto said.

“Indonesian chess is already good, it’s just a matter of how future players want to improve or not.”
Susanto added that the presence of chess tournaments and competitions is also key to the development of young talents in the field of chess. The 2021 KASAD Cup International Chess Championship, for example, also competes in the 14-year-old and 14-19-year-old junior categories.
“It’s also a proving ground for them,” Susanto said.
The Indonesian military together with the Board of Directors of the Indonesian Chess Association (PB Percasi) organized the 2021 KASAD Cup International Chess Championship on Sunday, with seven categories contested, including the international class which brought together three male grand masters, one of whom was Susanto.
