Germany beat USA 2-1 in ATP Cup Group C stage

by Edwin Robertson

BORNEONEWS, Jakarta – Germany took a 2-1 lead over the United States in Group C with wins for Alexander Zverev and Jan-Lennard Struff in the men’s singles at Ken Rosewall Arena in Sydney on Tuesday.

Struff gave Germany a 1-0 lead after throwing 34 aces at John Isner to produce a 7-6(7), 4-6, 7-5 win.

“It’s always tough against John. I’ve faced him four times already and they all ended in defeat, so I’m really happy to get a win for my team today,” Struff said of of his match, according to the ATP report.

According to Struff, the difficulty against Isner was not just a matter of patience, but also trying to avoid making service errors. Once service is interrupted, Isner will make a comeback that is hard to stop, he said.

Germany’s lead was continued by 12th-seeded Zverev, who beat Taylor Fritz in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 after a grueling service battle.

“It’s my second game of the year, which is good. It was really very intense with hard knocks. The most important thing is that the German team won and we did our best to achieve the semi-finals,” Zverev said.
