Eileen Clarke to leave provincial politics next fall – PortageOnline.com

Current MLA for Agassiz and the province’s Municipal Relations Minister, Eileen Clarke, has said she will not run again after her current term expires.

The news was announced Sunday, August 21 on Clarke’s Facebook.

“I’ll be patiently waiting to see what happens next. Relaxation and a slower pace would be a good start.”

The former mayor of Gladstone served two terms, starting in 2006.

She recently made headlines in the summer of 2021 when she stepped down as Minister of Indigenous Relations (a role she held from 2017 to 2021) after former Prime Minister Brian Pallister made controversial comments about Canadian history. However, Clarke was brought back to cabinet by Heather Stefanson following Pallister’s exit from provincial politics.

Stefanson returned Clarke to the cabinet by appointing her Minister of Municipal Relations, a title she will retain until her departure in the fall of 2023.

Clarke, 68, has served as MP for Agassiz since 2016, winning re-election in 2019.

The next provincial election is scheduled for October 2023.
