Catholic Equalizer encourages Canadians to accept Pope’s apology, reject politics and promote healing from residential school abuse

by Edie Jenkins

TORONTO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Toronto-based Catholic Equalizer encourages Indigenous people in Canada affected by the Indian Residential Schools scandal to accept Pope Francis’ apology as a vital first step towards legitimate healing and to ignore politically motivated voices calling for the dismissal of the Holy Father of Forgiveness.

“The pain of residential school survivors is as real as the need for healing,” writes Catholic Equalizer in a recently published editorial. “No apology or compensation will ever be enough to right the wrong. Only one solution will allow survivors and their families to move forward…and that solution is forgiveness.

Forgiveness is the only path that will free residential school survivors from their tragedy and allow them to rise above policies that seek to enslave them, the group says.

Catholic Equalizer is a group of Canadians who chose Catholicism as adults. They rose to prominence last year by sponsoring a petition chastising Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s attempts to exploit the residential schools scandal for political gain. Many of the petition’s 5,100 signatories saw his anti-religious rhetoric as a motivating factor in the burning or vandalism of 70 Catholic churches for which Trudeau has yet to take responsibility and apologize.

“Forgiveness does not mean that the wrong done previously did not occur or that it was not significant. Forgiveness is a way to free victims of slavery from revenge, distrust and pain. Forgiveness is a way for a victim to become truly free, where the abuser no longer has power over them,” according to Catholic Equalizer.

For this reason, the group encourages Indigenous peoples — and all Canadians — to ignore dishonest rejections of the Pope’s apology and demands that the Catholic Church accept institutional blame for the sins of the few. These sentiments are nothing more than naked attempts to keep Indigenous peoples in perpetual victimization as a means of diminishing the moral authority of the Church – for political purposes by the progressive left, which seeks to position itself as the only arbiter of what is right and wrong.

This cynical manipulation by Trudeau and his cronies is trapping residential school survivors in the political crossfire and must stop immediately.
