Canada upsets USA by winning men’s 4x100m relay at World Championships

Eugene: Canada surprised pre-race favourites, USA, by winning the men’s 4x100m relay at the World Championships in Athletics today.

The United States, which won all six medals in the men’s 100m and 200m, led all the way in the first three sets but was passed by Canada in the final set due to a messy stick pass . The Canadian team of Aaron Brown, Jerome Blake, Brendon Rodney and Andre De Grasse won with a world lead of 37.48, 0.07 seconds ahead of Team USA.

Great Britain took bronze in 37.83.

The United States won the women’s 4x100m relay with a world leading time of 41.14 seconds. Jamaica, led by Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce who won gold in the 100m and silver in the 200m a few days ago, finished just 0.04 seconds to claim silver, while the Germany took the bronze in 42.03.

Strong competition

Meanwhile, Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay faced stiff competition in the final round to win the women’s 5,000m title.

Tsegay clocked a winning time of 14 minutes and 46.29 seconds, with Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet taking silver in 14:46.75 and another Ethiopian, Dawit Seyaum, bronze (14:47.36).

Olympic champion Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands looked set to go for gold with 400m to go but ran out of steam after the final turn, finishing only sixth.

In the triple jump, Pedro Pichardo of Poland rushed a winning distance of 17.95 meters in his first attempt to win the gold medal.

None of the jumpers could beat the distance in the remaining attempts Hugues Fabrice Zango of Burkina Faso was second at 17.55, while China’s Zhu Yaming took bronze with a season best 17.31.
