What’s next for Bo Levi?

Now that Bo Levi Mitchell and his wife, Madison, have wrapped up their first reconnaissance mission in Hamiltonwhat happens next for the pending free agent quarterback the Ticats are pressing all over the field to sign here?

“I’m going to go back and talk to my agent (Dan Vertlieb),” Mitchell told The Spec over the weekend. “The next step is to consider what else might be there, but obviously I can’t speak to the other teams yet. The most important thing was to show the layout of the field in Madison. And I didn’t have haven’t seen much of Hamilton either, outside of hotels. So it was all about seeing the real estate, what’s there for my family. And I need to be somewhere where I think we can win. Hamilton is just up there, for winning, the last few years and that’s a big part of that.

RIP John Gregory

John Gregory, who died Monday at the age of 84, was the winning head coach when the Saskatchewan Roughriders won the 1989 Gray Cup over Hamilton 43-40 thanks to Dave Ridgeway’s final basket in what this corner considers as the greatest Gray Cup game ever played. Less than two years later, Gregory had been fired but quickly took control of the Ticats when David Beckman was sent off in August 1991 after an 0-8 start. Gregory’s Ticats reached the Eastern Finals in 1992 and 1993 losing each time to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. They were wiped out 59-11 in 1992, but despite their 6-12 regular season record and the Bombers’ 14-4 mark, the Bombers only won the East Final 20-19. This time, Gregory was on the wrong side of the last-minute winning basket, by Troy Westwood. He was replaced the following year as Ticat head coach by Don Sutherin after a 1-6 start

Four years ago, Gregory wrote a book about his football career titled “So you want to be a football coach.”
