Jakarta, CNN Indonesia –

Prime Minister Justin trudeau managed to keep his post after winning the midterm general election Canada Monday (20/9). However, his party failed to secure a parliamentary majority.

As reported ReutersTrudeau is certain to regain control of the Canadian government after the Liberal Party he leads wins the most votes in the election.

According to government data, the Liberal Party won 156 of 338 ridings. The Liberals’ toughest rival, the Conservative Party, managed to win just 119 votes in the riding.

In total, there are 338 seats representing each region in the Canadian parliament. To hold a majority, a party must have at least 170 seats.

With the results of this election, Trudeau’s party failed to secure a majority. Observers also believe Trudeau will find it increasingly difficult to pass various government programs.

Trudeau’s party actually got a parliamentary majority when it won the 2015 election. While there are still a number of issues, such as the inequality of business and the issue of embezzlement, popularity of Trudeau is still high.

However, the Liberal Party lost its majority when Trudeau ran into issues of racism in 2019. Since then, Trudeau’s popularity has steadily declined.

Before the election, the popularity of the Liberal Party was in fact considered sufficient to win a parliamentary majority. However, it turned out that the party’s popularity waned until the latest poll showed it would not get a majority.

Even though that prediction turned out to be true, Trudeau assured his citizens that he would work as hard as possible, including to save Canada from the Covid-19 pandemic.

Trudeau has pledged to develop a new budget to support economic recovery amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
