The union leader who led the 11-week Mount Pearl strike has been fired by the city

The union leader who led Local 2099 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees during a nearly 12-week strike in Mount Pearl this year has been fired by the city, according to his union.

Mayor Dave Aker, saying the city can’t talk about human resources issues, wouldn’t comment on Ken Turner’s firing except to say, “It’s not a labor relations issue.”

CUPE Newfoundland and Labrador President Sherry Hillier issued a press release Monday afternoon criticizing Turner’s firing.

“Firing a dedicated 11-year-old employee, who is also a 22-year-old military veteran who retired with honor and distinction, just two weeks before Christmas is just a disgrace, and city management should be absolutely ashamed of it. herself,” Hillier wrote.

Reached later by phone in Ottawa, Hillier said the union views Turner’s firing as retaliation for his leadership during the labor dispute.

“He’s been just an amazing gentleman and leader for his local,” Hillier said.

She said her firing was related to a respectful workplace complaint that Turner, who was a municipal engineer, filed against the city. She would not reveal any details of her complaint.

Hillier said CUPE filed an unfair labor practice complaint against the city.

“CUPE will fight this unjust and shameful dismissal by filing an unjust dismissal grievance at adjudication,” she said.

The more than 200 city workers represented by Local 2099 went on strike in early July following a 92% vote in favor of union action. Tensions were high at times, culminating in late August with strikers burning copies of the city’s final offer at a rally. The two sides were split on wages and sick leave, among other issues.

The work stoppage forced the cancellation of summer sports for young people.

The city accused the strikers of serious security violations during the dispute, and some workers said they feared disciplinary action.

Hillier said Turner is the only worker to have been laid off.
