The American Canadian School of Medicine will be operational in Dominica by 2023

Dominica’s Prime Minister Dr. Roosevelt Skerrit said the country will have a new medical school operational by 2023. He made the announcement while handing over the EC$1.3 billion to the House of Assembly Tuesday morning.

He said the American Canadian School of Medicine would be managed and operated at the former Ross University campus in Picard Portsmouth by CSOM Holdings Limited.

The Prime Minister said that the American Canadian School of Medicine would offer a 4-year medical degree and that preparations have started for an opening in September 2023. He said that after several months of negotiations, the government has finalized and agreed with CSOM holdings Limited.

“The school will offer a four-year medical degree designed for students who have already earned a bachelor’s degree. It will be led by an experienced team of doctors who have held positions at major universities in the United States, including a former vice president of operations at Ross University School of Medicine. Most students are expected to come from Canada, USA. of America and the Caribbean, said Prime Minister Skerrit.

He said initial preparations for early September 2023 have begun and will ramp up over the coming months.

Additionally, Prime Minister Skerrit added that the government is very optimistic about the potential of the new medical school and its positive impact on Dominica, especially the northerners.

Furthermore, speaking of the health and welfare sector, the Prime Minister said that the government continues to invest. He said the hospital in Marigot is ready and currently the medical equipment and furniture are being installed.

“The new Marigot hospital allows for the decentralization of services where patients will be offered a wider range of services; the presence of an intensive care unit, an operating theater dialysis unit, among many other features, will ensure that patients in the Marigot Health District will now be able to access improved services more quickly,” added Prime Minister Skerrit.

“During the past fiscal year, we pursued several projects, including the repair of existing health centers, the implementation of the OECS regional health project focused on improving health facilities and strengthening health services. laboratory, public health surveillance and emergency management,” the Prime Minister said.

He said the government has a deliberate plan to ensure Dominica provides the best possible health care to the people. The Prime Minister said that now public hospitals in Dominica also have the haI and HIFU machines which were put into use recently.
