Team Canada improved to a record of 10 wins and zero losses at the 2024 World Women’s Curling Championships in Sydney, Nova Scotia. The Canadian team led by Rachel Homan from Ottawa, Ontario, defeated Estonia 9:4 and New Zealand 9:2.
It was a fantastic start for the Canadians against Estonia as they scored seven points in the first two finals and took an 8-0 lead against Estonia after three finals. This was one of three games in the 15th draw that only ended over six ends, as Italy beat Norway 10-2 and Switzerland beat New Zealand 10-2. The only close game during the draw was a 9-7 USA win over Japan.
What was interesting was the fact that three games ended with the same draw. At the 2024 Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Calgary, I was told that all pool play would have to have at least eight ends to conform to international play. Still, there have now been seven games at the 2024 Women’s World Curling Championship, with six games ending. One also has to question the 13-team tournament and whether it should be reduced to 10 teams to simply make the games more competitive. Remember that less is more when it comes to the quality of games.
In the evening’s draw, Canada scored five points in the eighth game en route to a 9-2 victory over New Zealand. Canada plays Scotland and South Korea on Friday.
