Quebec accounts for 70% of cantaloupe salmonella cases in Canada

by Naomi Parham

Health officials say about 70 per cent of confirmed Canadian cases of the ongoing cantaloupe salmonella outbreak are in Quebec.

In an update on Dec. 7, the Public Health Agency of Canada said 129 cases have been recorded across the country since the outbreak began. There are 91 of them in Quebec, a significant increase from last week’s numbers, when the number of infections in the province was 35.

Canada has recorded a total of five deaths from the disease, although the health agency does not say where they occurred.

There are also cases in Ontario (17), British Columbia (15), Prince Edward Island (2), New Brunswick (2) and Newfoundland and Labrador (2).

There have been 44 hospitalizations across Canada related to the outbreak.

CTV News has asked Quebec’s Health Ministry where infections are most concentrated, but has not yet received an answer.

Officials issued several food recall warnings in November for Malichita melons sold between Oct. 11 and Nov. 14.

On November 24th, the alert was updated to include Rudy brand melons sold between October 10th and November 24th.
