PM appreciates Canadian solidarity and assistance with flood relief efforts

ISLAMABAD, Sep 12 (APP): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Monday expressed his appreciation for Canada’s solidarity and assistance to rescue and relief efforts following the devastating floods in Pakistan.

The Prime Minister was meeting with the Canadian Minister for International Development, Harjit Singh Sajjan, who visited him.

He thanked Mr. Singh for his visit during these difficult times when Pakistan was struggling with the effects of devastating floods, which caused great damage and suffering.

The Prime Minister informed him that over 1300 lives had been lost; more than 33 million displaced people; more than four million acres of crops destroyed; while 800,000 head of cattle had perished, severely affecting the livelihoods of families. The damage amounted to tens of billions of dollars, he added.

He pointed out that Pakistan contributes less than 1% to global carbon emissions, but is among the most vulnerable countries affected by climate change, as evidenced by recent climate events and unprecedented floods.

Underscoring the government’s commitment to rescue and relief efforts, the Prime Minister stressed that continued international support, solidarity and assistance will also be needed for the rehabilitation and reconstruction phase.

He also expressed his gratitude to the Canadian government for its assistance in projects related to women’s economic empowerment, sustainable economic growth and health sectors.

The Prime Minister noted that in the future, Pakistan will pursue a strategy of building back better. Pakistan needs experts and technical assistance to rebuild climate-resilient infrastructure that can withstand the disastrous effects of natural calamities in the future, he added.

Minister Harjit Singh Sajjan expressed his condolences for the victims of the floods and said the Canadian government would support Pakistan to help mitigate the disastrous effects of these floods and climate change.
