Liputan6.com, Ottawa – The Quebec City region has found its first case of the Omicron variant of COVID-19, Canada’s provincial health minister said on Monday, bringing the total number of cases in Canada to three.

Quebec Health Minister Christian Dubé also told reporters that 115 travelers from countries affected by the new variant, mainly South Africa, had been called and asked to self-isolate and test for COVID-19 . It’s as quoted from the page Channel News Asia, Tuesday (11/30/2021).

The first case of Varian Omicron in Quebec was a recent traveler to Nigeria, said public health director Horacio Arruda, similar to the two cases reported by the province of Ontario on Sunday.

The arrival of the new variant ahead of the Christmas holiday season comes as Quebec recently faced an increase in the number of cases, mostly among the unvaccinated, Dube said. In the past 24 hours, Quebec has reported 756 new cases.

Dube urged travelers to rethink vacation travel and cautioned against big celebrations. The provincial government has limited gatherings in private homes to 10 people.

“The next few weeks will be critical,” said Dube.
