Canadian Olympian Natalie Spooner of Scarborough, Ont., was named the inaugural star of the Professional Women’s Hockey League on Monday for Jan. 29-Feb. 4, 2024 Canadian Press. Spooner, 33, scored two goals and had an assist in Toronto’s 4-1 win over Minnesota at the Mattamy Athletic Center in Toronto, Ont., on Saturday.
Spooner scored the first goal with 54 seconds left in the first period. Canadian Olympic gold medalist Sarah Nurse of Hamilton, Ontario, and Rebecca Leslie of Ottawa, Ontario received assists. Spooner then received an assist on a goal by Canadian Olympic gold medalist Blayre Turnbull of Stellarton, Nova Scotia at 11:24 of the third period. At that point, Toronto had a 3-1 lead. Spooner then tied the score at 11:40 of the third period against Canadian Olympic gold medalist Jocelyne Larocque of Ste. away. Anne, Manitoba. Spooner and Larocque won the gold medal for Canada 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and that 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijingwhile Nurse and Turnbull won the gold medal for Canada at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
In nine games this season, Spooner has seven goals and one assist for eight points. Toronto is in fourth place with a record of four wins and five losses and 11 points. There were three wins in regular time and one win in the shootout.
