Sarah Mitton of Liverpool, Nova Scotia, won the gold medal at the 2024 World Indoor Athletics Championships in Glasgow, Scotland, on Friday. Mitton was the only Canadian to win a medal at the 2024 World Indoor Athletics Championships, winning gold.
Mitton had a winning throw of 20.22 meters. Yemsi Ogunleye of Germany won the silver medal with a throw of 20.19 meters. Chase Jackson from the USA won the bronze medal with a throw of 19.67 meters. Mitton reached the podium with a lead of 0.6 meters over New Zealand’s Madison-Lee Wesche, who took fourth place with a throw of 19.62 meters.
Mitton’s throw of 20.22 meters was actually a national Canadian indoor record. In fact, at the World Indoor Athletics Championships in Glasgow, she achieved the two longest women’s shot put throws in Canadian history. Mitton initially set the Canadian record of 20.2 meters with her fourth throw. Mitton’s gold medal-winning throw of 20.22 meters was her sixth throw in Glasgow.
Mitton also had the previous Canadian national indoor record of 20.08 metres. She achieved this feat on February 20th at the World Athletics Indoor Tour in the Czech Republic. The gold medal in Glasgow will give Mitton confidence as she prepares 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
