Italian farmers grow pumpkins weighing 1,226 kg

by Edwin Robertson
If cooking is an art, then growing vegetables is a science where proper fertilization, temperature control and a balanced amount of water play an important role. In March 2021, Damien Allard, a cabinet maker from Quebec, Canada, developed three large turnips (shalkam) – all breaking the record for the largest turnip in the world. In the same league that broke the world record for growing the heaviest vegetables, an Italian farmer grew a ‘monster pumpkin’ weighing 1,226 kg, which, according to the Guinness World Record (GWR), broke all world records.

According to the official Guinness Book of Records website, this pumpkin weighs more than a 17.5-year-old man and is heavier than a small car.

This large-scale pumpkin was cultivated by Tuscan farmer Stefano Katrubi. Interestingly, Stefano has been growing giant pumpkins since 2008. On September 26, 2021, this year’s pumpkin was presented at the 10th annual Campionado della Jucon Pumpkin Festival held in Peccoli. Big Pumpkin was judged by a representative from the Commonwealth, “which ensures that the quality of its game is adequate to match the competition.”

When asked if he could provide any information or advice to those looking to grow the next pumpkin record, Stefano said, “It’s no secret. Like other disciplines, it is about pursuing goals with method and perseverance.

Explaining the process, he said: “In mid-May the sun started to scorch the leaves of the giant Atlantic plant. From mid-June to mid-August, temperatures are typically between 33-40 C (91-104 F). Climate control is an important factor from germination to harvest. To allow plants to express themselves in the best possible way, including heating, cooling, shading, misting, watering – and feeding when needed.

According to the GWR website, Stefano Lo Jucon finished second and third in the competition, with two records weighing 978.99 kg and 794.51 kg respectively.
