CRETE– Indonesia has a good chance of being the host World Beach Games (GBM) 2023. This was based on a decision of the General Assembly of the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) in Crete, Greece on October 24-25.

Indonesian Olympic Committee (KOI) President Raja Sapta Oktohari, in a written statement on Monday, said ANOC chose Indonesia as the strongest candidate to host WBG 2023 due to his experience in the organization international multisport events, such as the 2008 Asian Beach Games in Bali, the Asian Games and the 2018 Asian Para Games.

Besides Indonesia, Hong Kong is also one of the countries interested in hosting WBC 2023.

It is rumored that ANOC will travel to Indonesia later this year to review the state of preparedness of the arena and competition facilities.

However, Okto stressed that the current goal is to release the Indonesian Anti-Doping Agency (LADI) from World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) sanctions so that preparations for the holding of the WBC and other championships can proceed without clashes.

“What is important now is that we must first be released from WADA sanctions to speed up all processes. We also encourage LADI to immediately resolve 24 outstanding issues, ”Okto said.

ANOC has restricted 14 sports to compete in the WBG. A total of 10 sports are the basic programs of ANOC, namely 5 km of open water swimming, beach water polo, beach soccer, beach handball, individual kata karate, kite foil, beach tennis, aquathlon (a discipline of triathlon which competes in running and swimming), 4×4 beach volleyball and wrestling on the beach.

The first edition of the WBG was held in Doha, Qatar, in 2019, following the withdrawal of San Diego as host. The second edition of the largest multisport beach sport biennial was originally held in 2021. However, it was postponed after ANOC due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Especially after receiving contributions from NOCs around the world who want to focus on preparing athletes for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, which have been postponed to 2021 due to the pandemic and the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics.
