Jakarta (ANTARA) – Italian tennis player Camila Giorgi won a WTA 1000 level tournament for the first time, with a victory in the 2021 Canada Masters final over fourth seed Karolina Pliskova on Sunday in Montreal, Canada.
Giorgi scored the biggest straight-set victory of his career 6-3, 7-5 in one hour 40 minutes, the WTA reported on its official website, WIB Monday.
The WTA 1000 tournament trophy is Giorgi’s third career title, his first since 2018, his first title above the WTA 250 level, and the first time he has won on hard outdoor courts.
The two previous titles were won at the tournament in ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2015 on grass and in Linz in 2018 on hard courts.
Giorgi has faced the Czech in the past two months in impressive form. She knocked out Pliskova 2-6, 6-2, 6-2 in Eastbourne’s first round in June, then continued with a 6-4, 6-2 third round victory at the Tokyo Olympics.
In Montreal, Giorgi again eliminated Pliskova for the third time in a row. For Pliskova, it was the third loss in tonight’s final, following losses to Iga Swiatek at the Rome Open and Ashleigh Barty at Wimbledon.
In action at the 2021 Masters of Canada, the world number 71 beat four seeds. The victims are Elise Mertens (9th seed), Petra Kvitova (7th), Coco Gauff (15th) and Pliskova.
Giorgi also made history by becoming the lowest ranked champion since Serena Williams won the title in 2011 which was then ranked 80th.
With a Canada Masters title, Giorgi will be in the top 35 for the first time.
