Eating for a healthy prostate in Movember and beyond

Maintaining nutrition during prostate cancer treatment

Diet during prostate cancer treatment depends on how advanced the disease is and what type of treatment someone is receiving. Some therapies may cause weight gain, while others may result in decreased appetite and diarrhea.

Those who do not experience adverse reactions to treatment are encouraged to follow the general cancer-fighting diet recommendations above and consume protein with every meal.

While there is no one-size-fits-all treatment diet, results can be improved when muscle health and maintaining muscle mass are a priority, explains Szabo-Kode. This means consuming enough protein and spreading the portions throughout the day.

Fish, meat, legumes, nuts and seeds, and yogurt are high-quality options.

“Protein should come from different sources, such as animals and plants,” she says.

“When it comes to preventing prostate cancer, it’s important to enjoy your food,” adds Szabo-Kode. “Eat different colors and use different food preparation methods. Remember that all food will fit inside. It’s not the slice of birthday cake at a birthday party or the ice cream cone you enjoy with your grandchildren on a hot summer day, but the nutritious choices you make day after day that truly make the difference.”
