CBC News could change before next election, 7 experts appointed

by Ainsley Ingram

Seven multimedia experts have been selected to advise Culture Minister Pascale St-Onge on renewing the role of Canada’s public broadcaster.

Canadian Heritage says the group will provide policy advice primarily on the governance and funding of CBC/Radio-Canada.

The Ministry points out that consultations with the public have already taken place on the CBC’s mandate.

The newly appointed advisory committee will now help St-Onge find its way forward. Its members bring knowledge from a variety of areas.

According to St-Onge, the committee members have different perspectives and experiences that will help her modernise public broadcasting.

Ottawa wants to redefine the CBC’s role ahead of the next federal election as the Liberals hedge against a possible change in government.

The advisory board includes:

— Marie-Philippe Bouchard, CEO, TV5 Quebec Canada;

— Jesse Wente, Chair of the Canada Council for the Arts, Founding Executive Director of the Indigenous Screen Office;

— Jennifer McGuire, executive director, Pink Triangle Press;

— David Skok, CEO and Editor-in-Chief, The Logic (independent media startup);

— Mike Ananny, associate professor of communications and journalism, University of Southern California Annenberg;

— Loc Dao, Managing Director of DigiBC;

– and Catalina Briceno, Professor, Université du Québec à Montréal.
