Canadian technology company is rethinking nutrient supply

by Tess Hutchinson

British Columbia-based company Lucent Bio recently announced the granting of a patent for its biodegradable nutrient delivery technology. Soileos.

The approach aims to reshape plant nutrition through more sustainable practices while helping to increase productivity.

An official product brochure describes Soileos as a “soil-injected, intelligent plant nutrient delivery system” that “improves yields, plant resilience and soil health”.

“This patented technology redefines the concept of sustainable agriculture by providing a fertilizer solution that is more efficient, greener and offers the farmer a better ROI,” said Peter Gross, Chief Technical Officer at Lucent Bio.

Soileos is made from recycled cellulose from plant processing, such as pea, lentil or rice husks.

This natural fiber promotes the nutrient cycle. Microbial decomposition, which occurs naturally, releases nutrients for crop use.

Unlike conventional products, Soileos organic substrate improves soil microbial biomass and increases soil organic carbon.

According to Lucent Bio, this natural nutrient delivery mechanism results in healthy agricultural systems where farmers achieve higher crop yields with improved nutrient density and healthier soils.

The patented technology is used by AGT Soileos in western Canada, a joint venture between Lucent Bio and AGT Food.

“This partnership is a prime example of how Canadian companies, supported by the Global Innovation Cluster program, are working together to help solve some of the most pressing problems facing the agri-food sector in commercializing new products,” said Protein Industries Canada CEO Bill Greuel.
