Canadian soccer company buys York United FC

24 April 2023 – Canadian Premier League (CPL) – York United FC press release

TORONTO, ON – Canadian Soccer Business (CSB) announced today that it has purchased York United FC of the Canadian Premier League (CPL) from the Baldassarra family, effective immediately. The purchase is made in anticipation of the club’s transfer to new ownership.

York President/CEO and General Manager Angus McNab will continue in his role during the club’s transition to new ownership, overseeing day-to-day management and football operations. McNab will now report to CSB for business operations and to the CPL League Office for football matters. All business and technical staff will remain in their roles as the club continues its 2023 CPL campaign.

“We would like to thank Michael, Carlo and the entire Baldassarra family for their early belief in the CPL and the role they played in getting the league to where it is today,” said Mark Noonan, CEO, Canadian Soccer Business and Commissioner, Canadian Premier League.

“We have collectively agreed that it is best to find new owners for York United to help this club continue to develop into what it can be: a world-class organization serving the football-loving community appropriate in the York area. In the meantime it’s business as usual.”

The Baldassarra family were part of the original ownership group that bought founding club CPL in 2018 ahead of the league’s inaugural season. The family became sole owners of the club in 2021.

“We are so proud to have invested in the future of Canadian football over the past few years,” said Michael Baldassarra. “However, we felt that the club, the community and its supporters would be better served going forward with new administrators at the helm bringing fresh energy and ideas. Our family would like to thank the amazing staff at York and Angus McNab for their tireless dedication over the formative years. We look forward to cheering on York as fans in the future.”
