Team Canada has qualified for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris in women’s water polo. Although Canada lost an Olympic qualifier 18-12 to Italy on Friday, it qualified because South Africa withdrew its participation. Canada placed eighth in the women’s water polo tournament at the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha, Qatar. They finished in the final qualifying spot despite having a losing record of three wins and four losses at the World Championships. One of these victories came against South Africa, when Canada won comfortably 24-2.
A total of 10 teams will take part in the Olympic Games in women’s water polo. Canada is joined by France, the Netherlands, Spain, Australia, China, the United States, Greece, Hungary and Italy.
South Africa did not withdraw from the Olympic Games in the men’s tournament, only in the women’s tournament. At the 2024 World Aquatics Championships in Doha, South Africa lost all three men’s matches by a combined score of 79-18. On the women’s side, South Africa lost its three games by a combined score of 63-10.
The International Olympic Committee must ask itself why a team from Africa was able to automatically take part in the Olympic Games in water polo. At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in 2021, South Africa lost all four women’s games by a combined score of 97-7 and men’s lost all five games by a combined score of 116-20.
