Team Canada is off to a strong start at the 2024 Women’s Water Polo Championships in Doha, Qatar. On Tuesday, Canada beat Great Britain 20-5.
In Canada’s 15-goal victory, Elyse Lemay-Lavoie of Montreal, Quebec, led the Canadians with four goals. She now has nine goals in two games, including five goals in Canada’s 24-2 win over South Africa on Sunday. Shae La Roche of Calgary, Alberta, was the only other Canadian player to score a hat trick, scoring three times. These two-goal Canadian players were Emma Wright of Lindsay, Ontario, Axelle Crevier and Marilia Mimides of Montreal, Kindred Paul of Spruce Grove, Alberta, and Blaire McDowell of Regina, Saskatchewan. Those Canadian players with one goal were Verica Bakoc of Toronto, Ontario, Daphne Guevremont of Laval, Quebec and Serena Browne of Montreal.
With the win, Canada improves on its record of two wins and zero losses. They are one of six undefeated teams so far. There are also Italy, Hungary, Australia, Spain and the United States. Canada next plays Italy on Thursday. The two best teams in the tournament, who have not yet qualified for the next Olympic Games, book their ticket to Paris.
