Canada beats Japan and Turkey at the Women’s World Curling Championships

Team Canada remains all alone in first place at the 2024 World Women’s Curling Championships in Sydney, Nova Scotia. On Wednesday, Canada beat Japan 7-2 and Turkey 9-5 to improve to eight wins and zero losses.

In both Canadian victories, the Canadian team was exceptional in the end without Rachel Homan of Ottawa, Ontario. After seven finals against Japan, Canada led 3-2 before the Canadians picked up three points in the eighth end and a stolen point in the ninth end. In Canada’s victory over Turkey, Canada actually trailed 4-3 after seven ends and 5-4 after nine ends before giving up five points in the tenth end. In the final against Turkey, Homan scored the decisive goal with two brilliant shots.

Italy is alone in second place with seven wins and one defeat. Switzerland and South Korea are tied for third place with six wins and two defeats. In a significant upset on Wednesday, Scotland beat Switzerland 6-5 in 11 games. Denmark is alone in fifth place with six wins and three defeats, and Sweden is in sixth place with five wins and four defeats.

Team Canada has four games left in the round-robin portion of the championship. They play against Estonia and New Zealand on Thursday and Scotland and South Korea on Friday.
