Colorado Avalanche star defenseman Cale Makar of Calgary, Alberta, scored his first National Hockey League hat trick of his career. He did so with the Avalanche’s dominant 7-2 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Wednesday at Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado.
Makar scored his first goal at 5:15 of the first period on an all-Canadian goal from defenseman Devon Toews of Abbotsford, British Columbia, and Nathan MacKinnon of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Makar then gave the Avalanche a 4-2 lead through Mikko Rantanen and MacKinnon at 16:12 of the second period and then scored for the Avalanche with 34 seconds left in the second period on the power play of Jonathan Drouin of Ste-Agathe, Quebec and Rantanen to take a 5-2 lead.
Makar actually had a four-point game when he assisted on a goal by MacKinnon. Four Canadians scored for the Avalanche. In addition to Makar and MacKinnon, Jean-Luc Foudy from Scarborough, Ontario and Drouin also scored. Three Canadians played a multi-point game. MacKinnon also had four points as he had a goal and three assists, and Drouin had a goal and an assist for two points.
In the 2023/24 season, Makar scored 17 goals and 53 assists for 70 points in 59 games. He is a +10 with 14 penalty minutes, 30 power play points, four shorthanded points, 182 shots on goal, 110 blocked shots, 30 hits, 55 takeaways and 34 giveaways.
