Calgary, Alta. (January 29, 2023) – In front of a large and energetic crowd in the women’s slalom at the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup in Spindleruv Mlyn, Czechia, Laurence St-Germain (St. Ferréol-les-Neiges, QC) was the top Canadian finishing seventh.
On a cloudy day, St-Germain was a model of consistency with the tenth fastest time in the first and second runs. Today’s seventh place follows yesterday’s 15th place at Spindleruv. It is St. Germain’s fourth straight top 25 finish and sixth run with World Cup points this season.
“It was great to have two solid runs and I’m really happy to be back in the top 10,” said St-Germain. “The crowd was amazing today, cheering and supporting everyone. It gives me a lot of motivation to prepare for the world championships.
Amelia Smart (Invermere, BC) finished 20th today, her fifth straight race in the points, while Ali Nullmeyer (Toronto, ON) did not qualify for the second run.
Under bright blue skies with no clouds in sight, the men raced a demanding super-G course at the FIS Alpine Skiing World Cup in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy. Canada placed five men in the top 30, with Brodie Seger (North Vancouver, BC) leading in 16th place. Cameron Alexander (North Vancouver, BC) and Riley Seger (North Vancouver, BC), starters back to back in the mid-1950s, placed 20th and 25th, respectively. Jeffrey Read (Canmore, AB) 23rd and Broderick Thompson (Whistler, BC) 27th completed the men’s World Cup points today.
“It was a tough technical course today, so five points is a great result for these guys,” said men’s speed head coach John Kucera. “They skied smart and tactically and skied well.”
“We are bringing a strong team to the world championships which start next week. We hope we can bring the momentum we have built throughout the season to these championships and come out with strong results.
James (Jack) Crawford (Toronto, ON), Kyle Alexander (North Vancouver, BC) and Trevor Philp (Calgary, AB) did not finish today’s race.
The 2023 FIS Para-Alpine World Skiing Championships in Espot and La Molina, Spain came to an end today with men’s and women’s slaloms that saw no Canadians advance to the second run. Canada ends these world championships with two bronze medals.
